Travel tips for beach and swimming, Rome, Pisa and Milan, Italy

If you land in Rome and want to visit a beach, I would recommend visiting some of the great beaches around Rome and the Lazio region. Here are some of the best options:

Great place near Rome ((c) Ingar Næss

Ostia: ( - one of my favourites)

  • This is one of the closest beaches to Rome and is easily accessible by train or car. The beach is known for its fine sand and clean water, and there are many beach clubs and restaurants here. (please read the whole article here) (hotels too)


Sabaudia: ( - one of my favorites)

  • This is a beautiful beach on the south coast of the Lazio region, around 100 km from Rome. Surrounded by sand dunes and pine forest, the beach is a great place to spend a day in the sun and swimming. (Please read the whole article) (hotels too)

Sperlonga:

  • This is a picturesque beach town located around 130 km from Rome. About 2 hours by train.


Santa Marinella:

  • This is another popular beach located around 60 km from Rome. The beach has fine sand and clear water, and there are many beach clubs and bars along the coast.


  • Gaeta: is also around 2 hours south of Rome by train. The town has beautiful beaches, a historic harbor and a medieval castle that is worth a visit. There are also many restaurants and shops here.


  • Terracina is another great seaside resort located about 1 hour south of Rome by train. The beach here is beautiful and there are also many great places to eat and drink.


  • Formia is about 1.5 hours south of Rome by train and is known for its beautiful beaches and cliffs. The city also has many great shops and restaurants to explore.

If you arrive in Pisa

- and want to visit a nearby beach, I would recommend visiting the Versilia coast, which is around 30-40 minutes by car from Pisa. Here you will find some of the most beautiful beaches in Tuscany, with clean water and beautiful nature.

Some of the most popular beaches on the Versilia coast include:


Viareggio Beach: ( - one of my favorites)

  • This is one of the most famous beaches in Tuscany, with a long sandy beach and a wide selection of beach clubs and restaurants.


Forte dei Marmi beach: ( - one of my top favorites) Coming article.

  • This is one of the most exclusive beaches in Tuscany, with crystal clear water and white sand. Here you will also find many shops, restaurants and cafes.


Marina di Pietrasanta Beach:

  • This is one of the most family-friendly beaches on the Versilia coast, with a wide sandy beach and many facilities for children, such as playgrounds and beach clubs.

Lido di Camaiore Beach:

  • This is another popular beach on the Versilia coast, with a long sandy beach and many restaurants and cafes along the promenade.

Beach and swimming if we land in Milan (fresh water and salt water)

If you arrive in Milan and want to visit a nearby beach, there are several options to choose from. Here are some of the best beach destinations near Milan:


Lago di Como: ( - one of my favourites)

  • This beautiful lake area is around an hour's drive north of Milan and has several public beaches and swimming areas ideal for a day trip. You can also take a boat trip on the lake and enjoy the beautiful view.


Lido di Bellagio:

  • This is one of the most popular beaches on Lago di Como, with crystal clear water and beautiful views of the lake and surrounding mountains.


Sirmione:

  • This is a beautiful town on the south side of Lake Garda, around an hour and a half's drive from Milan. The city has several beaches and bathing areas, including Jamaica Beach and Punta Grò.


Genoa: (salt water)

  • This is a beautiful harbor town on the Ligurian coast, around two hours by train or car from Milan. The town has several beaches and bathing areas, including Bagni Lido and Bagni San Nazaro.


When you visit these beaches, it is important to remember to bring sunscreen, beach towels and parasols to protect yourself from the sun. You can also rent sunbeds and parasols on most beaches if you wish. Check prices.
