Layover in Doha?

Turn the waiting time into an adventure.

For many travellers, Qatar is just a place to change planes. But the country is much more than one of the world’s best airports. With short distances and easy transport, you can, in just a few hours, experience modern city life, Arabian culture and the magic of the desert.

Here are three suggestions for what you can do, depending on how much time you have available.

6-hour stopover – A short glimpse of Doha

If you only have a few hours, it is important to choose wisely. Fortunately, the airport is only 15–20 minutes from the city centre.

  • Corniche and skyline: Take a taxi directly to the Corniche promenade. Here you will enjoy panoramic views of Doha’s skyline and, if time allows, a short ride on a traditional dhow.

  • Souq Waqif: Walk through the market where the scent of spices, freshly brewed coffee and incense fills the air. This gives you a taste of authentic Qatar in a short time.

  • Museum of Islamic Art: If you have an extra couple of hours, this museum is both architecturally impressive and filled with historical treasures.

Tip: Remember to allow time for security checks when returning to the airport – Qatar Airways recommends being back at least two hours before departure.

12-hour stopover – Half a day of culture and food

With a longer break, there is time for culture, shopping and a good meal.

  • Katara Cultural Village: Start the day with a visit to this cultural complex, home to art galleries, theatres and small cafés.

  • The Pearl-Qatar: Continue to the man-made island known for its marinas, luxury shops and exclusive restaurants. A perfect spot for lunch with a view.

  • Afternoon at Souq Waqif: Spend a few hours exploring deeper into the alleys of the market. Try local dishes such as machboos (spiced rice with meat or fish) or sweets like luqaimat (small honey dumplings).

  • Evening at the Corniche: Take a walk along the waterfront before returning to the airport.

Tip: In the evening, Doha lights up in bright colours – perfect if you want to capture the atmosphere with your camera or phone.

24-hour stopover – City and desert in one trip

With a full day available, you can experience the contrasts that make Qatar so special.

Morning – The city awakens

  • Visit the Museum of Islamic Art and enjoy the view from the park outside.

  • Continue to West Bay to see the skyscrapers up close, or visit one of the large shopping malls.

Afternoon – Desert adventure

  • Join a desert safari to Khor Al Adaid, also known as the Inland Sea, where the desert meets the ocean. Experience dune bashing in a jeep, camel riding and a sunset over the sand dunes.

Evening – A traditional ending

  • Back in Doha, finish the day in Souq Waqif with dinner at one of the many restaurants. Try grilled kebabs, Arabic coffee and dates.

Overnight stay

  • Doha offers hotels in all price ranges, from luxury such as the Mandarin Oriental to more affordable options near the airport.

Practical advice

  • Transport: Metro and taxis are inexpensive and efficient. From the airport to the city centre takes about 20 minutes.

  • Luggage: Store your suitcase at the airport so you do not have to carry it with you.

  • Dress code: Qatar is liberal, but dress respectfully (cover shoulders and knees).

  • Best time to visit: Between October and April, when the weather is most pleasant.

Why choose a stopover in Qatar?

Instead of spending hours at the airport, you can fill your journey with memories. In just a few hours, you can wander through busy souqs, see world-class architecture or experience the silence of the desert.

A stopover in Doha is not a pause – it is an opportunity to discover a new world.  pekka.makinen@stopover.qawww.stopover.qa
